Chapter One: Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study

Print media, comprising newspapers, magazines, and journals, plays a critical role in supporting the growth and development of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). In Gombe Local Government, Gombe State, print media serves as a platform for SMEs to advertise their products and services, disseminate market information, and build brand visibility (Abdullahi & Musa, 2024). Through targeted content, print media fosters entrepreneurial awareness, provides market insights, and educates SME owners about government policies, funding opportunities, and best practices. Studies indicate that consistent media exposure significantly enhances the competitiveness and sustainability of SMEs by connecting them with their target audience and stakeholders (Garba & Ahmed, 2023). However, issues such as affordability, accessibility, and the shift to digital platforms challenge the effectiveness of print media in this sector.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

While print media has the potential to empower SMEs, its influence in Gombe Local Government is underexplored. Challenges such as limited media reach, high advertisement costs, and the growing preference for digital platforms may hinder its impact (Bello & Yusuf, 2023). Furthermore, the extent to which SMEs leverage print media for business growth remains unclear. This study investigates the influence of print media on SMEs in Gombe, identifying areas for improvement to maximize its benefits.

1.3 Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the influence of print media on the growth and development of SMEs in Gombe Local Government.

2. To identify the challenges faced by SMEs in utilizing print media.

3. To recommend strategies for enhancing the role of print media in supporting SMEs.

1.4 Research Questions

1. How does print media influence the growth and development of SMEs in Gombe Local Government?

1.5 Research Hypotheses

1. Print media significantly influences the growth and development of SMEs in Gombe Local Government.

3. Improved accessibility and tailored content enhance the role of print media in supporting SMEs.

1.6 Significance of the Study

This study highlights the importance of print media in driving SME development in Gombe Local Government. The findings will benefit media practitioners, policymakers, and SME owners by providing insights into effective communication strategies for business growth. Additionally, the study contributes to the broader discourse on the role of traditional media in fostering entrepreneurship and economic development.

1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on the influence of print media on SMEs in Gombe Local Government, Gombe State. It excludes other forms of media and regions outside Gombe.

1.8 Operational Definition of Terms

• Print Media: Newspapers, magazines, and other printed publications used for communication and advertising.

• Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs): Businesses with limited capital, workforce, and operations, contributing to economic growth.
